Ideas That Move You.

Every Choice Means Missing Something

Every Choice Means Missing Something

Do you ever focus on something and then realise you've missed something else at the same time?

I often notice this in my everyday life. The more I think about it, the more I realise that choosing and missing seem to go hand in hand.

The moment I focus on my breath, I may miss the sensations in my body. When I look at one thing, my attention moves away from something else. And the moment I choose one path, I leave another path unexplored.

It makes me wonder: is being fully aware of everything at once even possible?

I experience this in my own life, too. I want to spend time with my child, and I want to work on my writing and coaching. Both matter to me. But when I give my time to one, I cannot give that same time to the other. I have to choose what needs my attention at that moment.

And perhaps this is true of more than just time.

Sometimes we want two things at once. We want to be present where we are while wondering what else we could be doing. We want to enjoy the path we have chosen while thinking about the possibilities we have left behind.

Perhaps what makes choosing difficult is not always the decision itself. Sometimes, it is our unwillingness to accept what the decision means we will miss.

We want to keep every door open. We want to experience every possibility. We want to give our best to everything that matters to us. But can we really experience everything at the same time?

Even when we decide to focus on one thing, we are allowing other things to wait. That does not necessarily mean we have made the wrong choice. It simply means our attention, time, and presence have limits.

Maybe the goal is not to find a way to miss nothing. Maybe it is to become aware of what we are choosing, understand why we are choosing it, and accept what must wait because of that choice.

The sooner we accept that every choice leaves something unexplored, the easier it may become to choose with clarity.

Because sometimes, choosing well is not about getting everything. It is about being at peace with what we cannot have all at once.

Prompt for reflection - What are you choosing in your life right now, and what are you finding difficult to let go of?

Take a moment to reflect on the choices you're making and the possibilities you're leaving unexplored. You might discover something about yourself.
