Grief and happiness will not disappear. People say that with time, the grief will be gone. But I don’t think so. Emotions stay somewhere in our lives and in our bodies. They neither disappear nor change. They stay as they are.
So what actually changes? We. Yes, we change over time. We witness the emotions, feel them, and then we go on with our lives. At the same time, their weight changes over time. It depends on how aware you are of the situation and how long the incident lasted. I’m not saying this is true for everyone or in every case, but I say it because I have been through it, whether it is related to a person or a situation, happiness or sorrow.
I can’t laugh at the same joke the same way every time I hear it, or celebrate my previous win the same way. Similarly, I can’t feel the same amount of sadness about the same incident I have gone through. That is because time has passed and I’ve moved forward.
Now, whenever I feel excited about something, I don't celebrate it for long, whether it was my first client, my first guest lecture at a management college, or something else.
I have lost both my parents. For one, I was prepared because I knew the condition; for the other, I wasn’t, because it happened suddenly. The loss of both my parents will always stay with me. Even today, I sometimes cry remembering them, but those moments no longer last as long. Maybe because I accept that it is the ultimate truth of life, and one day it will be me. I move on in my life, evolve through my experiences, and carry the same emotion with me.
I am not saying I have become neutral, but yes, after facing ups and downs, I know that it will continue till the last breath. The moment we celebrate or mourn is gone, but the feeling stays with us. So why hold on to the moment?
Has a grief or a joy of yours changed shape over the years? Tell me about it.
